We continue to have a number of constructive discussions with various customers on this topic and supporting them in either deploying solely wireless vibration sensors across their assets or supporting them in a hybrid strategy, in particular, to deliver predictive maintenance (PdM) outcomes.
What is central to bear in mind is that there are no main ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ answers when evaluating fix-wired versus wireless vibration sensor solutions. Fix-wired and wireless vibration sensors have their own benefits and obstacles, therefore, a balanced approach will offer the most optimal strategy of performance versus cost versus benefits.
Another important aspect to note is that battery technology development has taken considerable advances in recent years and improvements continue to accelerate. Reasonings for not using wireless vibration sensor technology because of poor battery longevity have become no longer valid. The availability of improved battery life enables the use of wireless sensors to be economically more feasible. Moving from replacing batteries every few months, to every five years and beyond removes past constraints of wireless sensor battery life and makes the use of wireless sensors more cost competitive with fix-wired sensors.
